Why Your Instrument Goes Out of Tune
The common reasons strings drift sharp or flat, including temperature, old strings, nut friction, and playing pressure.
Temperature and humidity move the instrument
Wood, metal, and strings react to the environment. A guitar taken from a cold car into a warm room can drift quickly as the neck and strings adjust.
Let the instrument acclimate before final tuning when possible. If you tune immediately after a temperature change, expect to check it again soon.
Old or new strings behave differently
New strings stretch and settle. Old strings lose elasticity, collect dirt, and can intonate poorly. Both situations can make tuning feel unstable.
This is why a guitar keeps going out of tune after changing strings, and why a brand-new guitar drifts for the first few days: the fresh strings are still stretching. Stretch new strings gently, retune several times, and replace old strings when they sound dull or refuse to settle.
Nut and bridge friction can trap tension
If a string catches in the nut slot, tuning changes may not distribute evenly across the string. You might hear a small ping as the string releases, followed by sudden pitch movement.
This is one reason tuning up to the note works so well. Persistent binding may need nut lubrication or setup work from a technician.
Playing pressure changes pitch
Pressing too hard behind the fret can pull notes sharp. Aggressive picking can also make a note start sharp before it settles.
Tune with the same attack and pressure you use while playing. If chords sound sharp even when open strings are correct, relax the fretting hand.
